The World Around It On a Ship Mostly eBook James Wearne
If you are thinking about a freighter trip, read this for a dose of reality. This memoir offers readers a personal view of the author's freighter trip around the world from Newark to Seattle. The advantage of this book is that it offers an authentic view of freighter travel. Or as the author writes of other books and blogs about such trips, "...they were all helpful and excellent. They were also written by nice, polite people who, I now realize, now that I've also traveled by freighter, left out a lot. Not that they tell you only the good stuff, but they just don't want to hurt anybody's feelings or put anybody off the idea of travel by freighter." His account includes the good -- friendly crew members, a sense of the majesty of the world's oceans, and a bit of introspection -- along with the bad -- repetitive meals, and missed opportunities to visit Asian ports due to weather (a hurricane) and scheduling problems -- and the ugly -- outright lies and an incredibly bad attitude by the booking company, Despite the problems, the author notes he would have still taken his trip but would have prepared differently.Product details

The World Around It On a Ship Mostly eBook James Wearne Reviews
There is no White Whale, but Jim Wearne’s new travel book is a remarkable achievement nonetheless. In “The World. Around It. On a Ship. Mostly,” Mr. Wearne shares his thoughts, sensations, and wit through 65 days on a freighter. Through most of the journey he has only crew members as companions, few of whom speak English, and nothing but water, water, and more water all around. That means that he is left alone with his own thoughts, and so we join him in savoring small pleasures, things like a good cup of coffee, the sight of a distant ship, or the spectacle of a starry night. For this reader, it’s the pleasure he takes in little things that made this book such a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.
